Better than eating your own stomach!
Videos
Here are some short videos by “Hugosmith
Productions,” the semi-official video group formed by Derek Hugo and myself
(and sometimes our younger brothers). You must have Windows Media Player installed,
and you must be willing to wait for large amounts of time for the videos to
load. Also, visit the website of our sister film squad, DoubLe M
Productions.
New! Oh joy! Ugly People Anonymous – This is the
only project on this page that was not made for a school
assignment. Thus, unlike the other films, it does not contain any references to
Shakespeare, African colonialism, or obscure New Yorker pieces. Just a bunch of guys
with bags. It took most of a day to shoot because I kept screwing up my lines.
Not available! Pleasant Dreams – For a final AP English project, Derek Hugo,
Mike Bertrand, Bethany Sims, and I made a video in which we tried to
impersonate as many characters from the works we’ve read as possible in fifteen
minutes or so. We used a ton of copyrighted songs in that thing, so I don’t
think that YouTube would appreciate me uploading it.
From what I’ve heard, it doesn’t make much sense anyway unless you’re familiar
with every single character from every single story. If you really want to see
it, give me a blank DVD-R or DVD+R and I can burn you a high-quality copy of
every video.
The Spleen of
Darkness – This is a parody of Joseph
Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness
that Derek Hugo and I filmed for an AP English project. We filmed this
video mostly as an alternative to actually having to write something about the
story. We determined scene order and location before filming, but the script
was mostly improvised on location. It was filmed mostly during two mornings in
which high school seniors didn’t have to go to school until noon because the
other grades were taking state-required standardized tests. This online version
is compressed and slightly edited.
Transcendentalist Poets Say the Darndest Things! - For an English project, Derek
Hugo and I made a knock-off TV talk show about acclaimed Transcendentalist
author Henry David Thoreau, whom I’m sure you’re all familiar with. The actual
video is 8 minutes long and 60 megabytes, so I sloppily took out the
educational parts and compressed it to crap, resulting in an oh-so-manageable
file size of 4.34 MB. We made it on Windows Movie Maker 2 (because it’s free)
and shot the main interview scenes with a regular 3.1 megapixel digital camera.
I’m supposed to be Bill Cosby during the interview, but I can’t do an
impression of him, so I just wore a stupid wig and ate Jell-O pudding.
